“Despite the seemingly strong empirical support in previous studies for theories of majoritarian democracy, our analyses suggest that majorities of the American public actually have little influence over the policies our government adopts. Americans do enjoy many features central to democratic governance, such as regular elections, freedom of speech and association, and a widespread (if still contested) franchise. But, …” and then they go on to say, it’s not true, and that, “America’s claims to being a democratic society are seriously threatened” by the findings in this, the first-ever comprehensive scientific study of the subject, which shows that there is instead “the nearly total failure of ‘median voter’ and other Majoritarian Electoral Democracy theories [of America]. When the preferences of economic elites and the stands of organized interest groups are controlled for, the preferences of the average American appear to have only a minuscule, near-zero, statistically non-significant impact upon public policy.”
To put it short: The United States is no democracy, but actually an oligarchy.”

In which John Green teaches you about capitalism and socialism in a way that is sure to please commenters from both sides of the debate. Learn how capitalism arose from the industrial revolution, and then gave rise to socialism. Learn about how we got from the British East India Company to iPhones and consumer culture in just a couple of hundred years. Stops along the way include the rise of industrial capitalism, mass production, disgruntled workers, Karl Marx, and the Socialist Beard. The socialist reactions to the ills of capitalism are covered as well, and John discusses some of the ideas of Karl Marx, and how they’ve been implemented or ignored in various socialist states. Plus, there are robots!

October 2, 2015 at 3:37 AMHow sad that videos like this only get such minimal views…….this is the problem…people are apathetic towards politics because they have been lied to and let down by politicians over the yrs. Because of this they have given up and don't bother to get involved in politics which is exactly what the 1% wants. If the people ever wake up it's over for these elites.

So… It's time to recognize that plutocracy is in democracy. This was the eventual end of 40 years of policy coming from Reagan and ending with Obama.
Our schools are decimated, our foreign policies in shambles, our government has betrayed the Constitution.
But they fear one thing. The public. Because the public united can topple ANY form of government. While I'm amenable to getting money out of politics, that alone can't save our democratic republic. It's time to recognize that the Constitution upholds plutocracy and forces us to fight on the grassroots where we are strongest.
That's how we win. It's time to work to our strengths and fight for a new America that doesn't only fight for money out, but bottom up politics. No exceptions. We fight for people to come together with democracy at our core. Democracy in the workplace, democracy and engagement on the issues, that is our way.
But how you ask? We fight for workers. The bottom rung is the first ones fired. Those are the ones to be protected. We fight to make them their own bosses and create co-ops. We fight to turn these students and small business owners into the next society. One that no longer has capitalism at its core. Those co-ops fight for democratic means of production for housing, schools, medicine, and everything in between.
That is the fight.
As of now, this is a signal that capitalism does not deliver the goods save to the select few. As such, we must move to begin the transition. We don't have the money, but by the Gods do we have the numbers to make a new society…

October 2, 2015 at 7:55 AMTime and time again, history have shown that socialism is destructive. Look at Portugal, Italy, Belgium just to name a few. All of these countries are at the point of defaulting on their debt and is threatening the integrity of the European Union. Greece have been bailed three times since it can't stop using other people's money (from Germany) to run its socialist regime.
Today, most socialist nation are at the verge of economic collapse which are causing a lot of volatility in the market place.
Before anyone start bashing at this comment, please take the time to do a bit of "googling" on what is happening in today's global economy and markets then find the catalyst. Hint, it's socialism.

October 2, 2015 at 12:37 PMIn order to serve the needs of the people, a Governement needs people in need. For a system where the Governement takes care of all the people to work, there needs to be people to take care of. In the ideal world of socialism, the income gap is as close as possible. So socialist governments have to tax the rich to take care of the poor, whether it's food stamps or foreign immigration or mediocre state education, right out of the pockets of hard working citizens. They have to tear families apart by sending mothers to the market, leaving the state to brainwash, I mean educate and care for the children. Without the protection of their mothers, children are vulnerable to undesirable influence. It is this same education that teaches independance from family, leaving the inner cities with adults who sleep around, and children with no fathers. Without fathers, the boys turn to crime ridden gangs and girls to men who take advantage of them. All to keep the families separated and the people brainwashed, poor and reliant on the state for support on such things as single parent homes. And it's these same suckers that vote for these same socialists they rely on. Which brings me to my next point. What happens to socialist governments when the people stop being poor? They lose power. So for socialist/left wing politicians to become powerful, they need poor people. Search up Stalin's 'Chicken' story. When the people seem to begin to earn a better life for themselves, they find ways to make keep them poor. So they can continue to rely on the big brother government for support. Don't expect a governmental system that runs on poor people to improve the quality of lives of people, don't expect the socialists to seriously empower the people. Remember that American capitalism (The American Dream) was a system built on the family, not the state, and allowed each family to earn their honest living without the Governement taking their money away.

October 2, 2015 at 1:49 PMCapitalism and socialism work hand to hand in the USA. Pure capitalism and pure sociaism is a joke. The problems we have having our nation has gone all in by some with uncheck capitalism. Our nation will fail with a fully privatize government unregulated. We live in a socialize society therefore we have socialism like the US Postal Servie and other government workers along with the Armed Services, state and local governments, the police and fire departments and other services to serve the people. A fully socialize nation using socialism will fail as well. The key word is balance. Society buys and makes goods to enable capitalism but the people must be protected as well. Remember it says WE THE PEOPLE not WE THE CORPORATIONS. 1 reason we need money out of politics right, left or center. A crack down on lobbyist. Corporations are entities and not people. ry reason CITIZENS UNITED needs to be overturn. Income has went to the top 0.1 % and social programs get the blame. The problem is unregulated capitalism causing social ills. Once again there is no balance. We need a dose of socialism now for balance but not a overdose of socialism.

October 2, 2015 at 2:07 PMI think this isn't about a country's sake anymore and now it's all about the hatred both parties hold against eachother, i really do. Or at least i hope so, otherwise it would mean that both parties are so unbelievably blind that they can't see that both their systems are ABSOLUTELY BOUND TO FAIL if they ignore the other side of the spectrum.
Both extremes are fucking stupid, end of story. Find a middle ground or watch your "perfect system" collapse.

October 2, 2015 at 3:05 PMJust look at these comments. Neo-Marxists LITERALLY have the minds of kindergartners. They think good intentions = good results, and that's all they need to know about politics.
Puglous says
October 2, 2015 at 3:13 PMIn 1950:
-The average American family spent 20% of their income on food
-Had less than 1,1000 square feet of living space
-Had zero chance of owning air conditioning, computers, or cellphones
-Had a life expectancy of 65 years old.
Today, even Americans living under the poverty line are better in all those regards. So how the fuck are the poor getting poorer? How the fuck is economics zero-sum?
The truth is the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting richer too. That's iron clad, objectively verifiable, historical fact.
Puglous says
October 2, 2015 at 3:18 PM"Capitalism makes the rich richer and the poor poorer."
Uh, no factophobes. It makes the rich richer and the poor richer. Explain why India and China have seen an explosion in standard of living since they opened their doors to foreign corporations.
The reason for the global disparity in wealth is that the poor nations have just started to get a taste of Western capitalism (if they're even that lucky), while the rich nations have been swimming in it for a century.
Puglous says
October 2, 2015 at 4:07 PMSince Western capitalism makes the poorer, shouldn't imposing sanctions and embargoes on nations be considered an act of kindness?
